Ellie Malin is a Melbourne-based artist who works predominantly in woodblock printmaking and painting. Inspired by observations from life, she translates her ideas into an intuitive world of layered fields of colour, bold geometries, and chromatic compositions. For Malin, these works evoke memories of time and space.

In ‘Improvised Landscape III’, these compositional elements of shape, colour, and texture are vividly accentuated. As with many of her works, the process inherent to Malin’s chosen woodblock medium becomes an integral feature of the finished work. Fragments of geometric shapes appear layered and enmeshed, revealing the chronology of the artist’s process, while the patterned grain of the wood introduces an additional textural dimension. Malin’s practice exists on the threshold between printmaking and painting, with each print emerging as a unique state.

Throughout her career, Malin has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across Australia, and her work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally. She has been selected as a finalist in numerous awards, including the Senini Award at McClelland Gallery, the Swan Hill Print and Drawing Award, and the Banyule Works on Paper Award. For collectors of abstract works on paper, or those fascinated by the possibilities of contemporary printmaking, Malin’s works offer an intriguing discovery.
