A work that feels more like a painting than a print, Hills of Lava is experimental in form. The artist, Jane Marriott, peers in at Victoria’s volcanic ranges. The scene is moody and foreboding, the sky a bruising grey.

Hills of Lava forms part of ‘Footprints’, a suite of prints by sixteen Central Victorian artists that coincided with the international printmaking conference IMPACT 7 2011: Intersections & Counterpoints’. Exploring themes of sustainability, reconstitution and recycling, ‘Footprints’ celebrated the Central Victorian landscape, experimental printmaking and the importance of conservation.

Marriott is a highly respected artist. Using the natural world to frame her work, Hills of Lava is a beautiful find for collectors of contemporary prints.
