Nicola Mason is a contemporary New South Wales-based artist who works predominantly within the genres of still life and landscape. Across her practice, Mason explores the intersection of domestic and ecological themes, drawing on her background in nature conservation to inform her distinctive artistic perspective. The resulting paintings are both intriguing and atmospheric, reflecting Mason’s personal visual language and her ongoing interest in reimagining the possibilities of still life painting.
In ‘The measuring cup duck and the banksia’, Mason composes a compelling still life scene, placing together two items, one domestic and one natural, that do not usually coincide. The resulting work is refreshing, a reflection of the artist’s personal fascination with both still life and ecological themes, providing a small insight into her interior world. In vibrant contrasting tones, the small ceramic duck appears almost alive, content with its newest accessory.
Mason has exhibited regularly throughout Australia, both in solo and group exhibitions. She has been included in numerous national art prizes, including the Portia Geach Memorial Prize, the Calleen Art Award, and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Recently, Mason was selected as a finalist for the Wynne Prize for 2026, and her landscape work is currently exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. For collectors of atmospheric and unexpected still life paintings, Mason’s works are a joy to discover.
