Australian artist Rodney Milgate was a polymath, his talents spanning art, literature, broadcasting and academia. As well as being a Professor of Visual Arts, he was a newsreader on Channel 7 and playwright, producing the work ‘A Refined Look as existence’ in 1968, considered one of the earliest Australian texts to capture the emotional turbulence of the 1960s.
‘Dilemma’, an original hand-signed screenprint, is an intricate and compelling image. In a palette that moves between soft purples, blues and red, Milgate creates a composition reminiscent of a stained glass window or the facade of a church. Despite its title, this work is serene under the eye.
A three time winner of the Blake Prize for religious art and winner of the 1987 Sydney Morning Herald Art Prize, Milgate was a distinctive and celebrated artist. For collectors of 1970s art and original screenprints, come to peace with ‘Dilemma’.
