Jan Mitchell’s ‘Willow Pattern Cat’ is born from a witty observation – when tucked into a perfect disc, a cat can resemble a dish. Mitchell takes its tiger stripes and turns them blue, imagining her feline friend as a willow patterned ceramic, blissfully unaware of our presence.
Mitchell was a beloved artist. Before moving to Australia, she helped create Ireland’s first pre-school television show named after its red-haired central character, Bosco. In Australia, she was the ingenious mind behind Geelong’s anthropomorphised bollards and remembered with the Jan Mitchell Memorial Prize, posthumously named in her honour.
Whether a waterfront structure or napping cat, Mitchell found the possibility for art everywhere she looked. For collectors of female artists, prints and cat people, ‘Willow Pattern Cat’ is a delight.
