Anne Montgomery 'Untitled (Still Life)' - Collected by Ian

Anne Montgomery was a distinguished painter, printmaker, muralist and lecturer whose work was central to Melbourne's mid-century artistic community. Educated at the George Bell School, Montgomery is most celebrated for her works deeply connected to nature, particularly the coastlines of Sandringham, local flora and landscapes of rural Victoria.

In ‘Untitled (Still Life),’ Montgomery represents a vibrant still life of a bouquet of flowers arranged in a simple, rounded jug. Using oil paint, Montgomery creates an intimately atmospheric and richly textured work capturing the flower’s presence through expressive yet controlled brushstrokes. This work offers quiet, contemplative viewing centred on the beauty of the flowers.

A key figure in the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, Montgomery exhibited widely through the 1940s and 1950s. She studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School and later became aligned with George Bell's circle, maintaining a more traditional approach while many artists around her moved toward abstraction. Though her visibility diminished in her later years, Montgomery’s contributions as an artist and member of the exclusive George Bell circle are now celebrated for their enduring impact on Australian art.

Newly re-appreciated and recognised for her contribution to the modern art canon in Australia, Montgomery’s works are held in significant public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. For lovers and collectors of mid-century Australian art, ‘Untitled (Still Life),’ is a wonderful addition to a collection.
