Yinarupa Nangala (c. 1959) is a Pintupi woman, born west of the Kiwirrkurra region in Western Australia. She began painting in 1996 after her children were grown, and by the late 2000s her ‘classic Pintupi’ style of painting finally began receiving recognition. In 2009 she was the winner of the Telstra and Torres Strait Islander Painting Award.

Her work explores the country and stories of Makula country and women’s ceremonies - stories passed down from her paternal mothers family. Her paintings reference this Dreaming path of a group of Tingari women who travelled through Mukula, gathering bush foods along the way. The women are symbolised by ‘U’ shapes, shown collecting native foods such as kampurarrpa (desert raisin) and pura (bush tomato). The shapes woven throughout her compositions represent both the bush foods gathered and the landscape features encountered along their journey, mapping a path rich with cultural knowledge embedded in Country.

This vibrant canvas depicts Nangala’s quintessential representations of women around rockpools. For collectors of First Nations art and Dreamtime stories, this work is an inviting find.
