In the works of Anh Nguyen, the world around her serves as constant inspiration. Based on the NSW South Coast, Nguyen has been recognised for her ability to capture the domestic space, creating atmospheric paintings that often hold a gentle, dreamlike quality. Describing her practice, Nguyen has said “still life is the thing that is close by … it is all part of the observed world and ready for a curious magpie to eyeball’. In her paintings, this sense of curiosity is abundantly observed - each object constructed and re-constructed, reflective of mood, light, space, and most importantly, perspective.

In ‘Artefacts’, Nguyen creates the impression of a small statue and a painted vase, two objects that are either historically important or domestically decorative. In many of Nguyen’s works, she explores the conflict of the still life genre - the world appearing both simplistic and complex, simultaneously emotional and detached. We see this with ‘Artefacts’, as the objects are intimately captured, yet also obscured from the viewer, their significance left entirely up to personal interpretation.

Over the past decade of her practice, Nguyen has been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including the Wollongong Art Prize, the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award, and the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Prize. Nguyen is also a featured artist in Amber Creswell Bell’s ‘Still Life: Contemporary Australian Painters”. For collectors of atmospheric scenes of everyday life, Nguyen’s paintings are a jewel to discover.
