Fiona O’Byrne is a Melbourne-based painter whose practice centralises on elevating the quiet corners of domestic life. Her paintings, often reflecting either still life compositions or intimate portraits, invite the viewer to slow down, finding beauty in the everyday. Originally trained as a landscape architect, O’Byrne’s transition to painting has provided a renewed way of observing and interpreting the natural world.
In O’Byrne’s painting ‘Sophie’s dish’, the artist constructs an intriguing scene, one of a melange of fruits co-existing in the same ceramic bowl. Using a classical style life approach, O’Byrne uses composition, contrasting tones, and accented forms to create a sense of narrative - blueberries left abandoned, or escaping from the dish. With a title referring to the central dish, created by Melbourne-based ceramicist Sophie Moran, O’Byrne allows the viewer an intimate insight into her domestic sphere, grounding this work in her own everyday life.
Over the last decade, Fiona O’Byrne has exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions. She has been a semi-finalist in several national art awards, including the Lester Prize, the Shirley Hannon National Portrait Award, and the Doug Moran Portrait Prize. For collectors of considered still life paintings, or those enamoured by the quiet beauty of the everyday, O’Byrne’s works are a joy to discover.
