Alongside art, cooking was one of John Olsen’s great pleasures. It came to him as a young adult when he first left Australia for Europe, leaving without the ability to boil and egg and returning with an exuberant passion for food, having worked as an apprentice chef in Portugal and Spain. Cooking became one of the arteries of his life, finding its way into his art.
In ‘Duck a L’Orange’, Olsen pays homage to the iconic French dish. The image is intoxicating – food merging with company and setting in a cacophony of forms. Olsen’s use of colour is delectable, the browns evoking the umami of a duck breast and the orange, a citrusy zing.
Olsen is represented across all public collections, contributing not only a distinct but a deeply contemplative perspective to Australian art. This hand-signed fine art archival print is a fulfilling find for collector Olsen, foodies and those that love to entertain. ‘Duck a L’Orange’ is ready to serve.
