In an echo of nature itself, John Olsen’s work resists stillness. His line is in constant motion, looping, darting, and unfurling across the surface to evoke the vitality and interconnectedness of the living world. Inspired in part by Paul Klee’s notion of “taking a line for a walk,” Olsen extends this idea into the landscape itself, tracing not simply what is seen, but what is experienced: a total, immersive encounter with place.

‘River and Wattle’ is a luminous expression of this vision. Viewed from above, the river cuts a dark, sinuous path across the canvas, its meandering form opening up a sense of vast, aerial space. Yet this sweeping perspective is intimately counterbalanced by a teeming foreground of life; wattle blooms rendered as vivid yellow constellations, alongside a lively proliferation of marks, dots and calligraphic gestures that suggest insects, plants and birds. In the top corner, a bird settled in its nest offers a moment of quiet delight amid the visual energy.

This interplay between the monumental and the minute reflects Olsen’s deep engagement with the Australian landscape, particularly following his travels through remote regions such as Lake Eyre in the 1970s. Here, he came to understand the land not as a static vista, but as a living system; what he once described as its “nervous system” of rivers and dry creek beds, perceptible only through movement, memory, and imagination.

As a hand-signed fine art print, this work offers collectors the opportunity to engage with one of John Olsen’s most poetic achievements; an image that is at once exuberant, contemplative, and unmistakably his. Represented across all major public collections, Olsen has contributed a distinct and deeply reflective perspective to Australian art. In his words, “Don’t think of form, think of forming. Forming is a growing, developing process, like a plant or living organism.”
