In August 2024, a miracle hit Victoria’s Werribee Zoo. Sixteen months after the death of her first calf, Kipenzi the white rhinoceros once again gave birth to a healthy, happy and voracious calf. Like many first time mums, Kipenzi struggled with her first calf who represented the first white rhino to be born at the Zoo in almost a decade; with her son, she has settled into the role, even calling him when he strays too far.
With just 10,000 white rhinos left in the wild, any addition to the species is significant. In ‘White Rhino’ John Olsen pays tribute to this. A genuine animal lover, his work celebrates all forms of life, seeing everything from the land to its inhabitants as interconnected. In 'White Rhino', his vision falls on one of Africa's most magnificent and precarious creatures. Bursting with life yet embedded in an urgent context, this work is visually impressive and culturally vital.
Olsen is among Australia’s most recognised and iconic artists. With a career spanning over 50 years, Olsen's work is celebrated and collected by all major Australian institutions. Made of the finest museum quality archival materials, this collectable limited edition print is hand signed by the artist.
For collectors of Olsen and environmentalists, this work promises to inspire, acting as a poignant reminder to protect nature as well as the powerful drive to survive.
