Jim Pavlidis is a contemporary artist, illustrator, and printmaker based in Melbourne. A former visual journalist and illustrator at The Age, Pavlidis has become recognisable for his references to Australian iconography, including representations of AFL players in action, and depictions of Melbourne urban landscapes. Through his works, Pavlidis often explores scenes of everyday, domestic living - in the mundane, the artist finds unexpected beauty.

In ‘Dusk’, the artist represents a simple, yet melancholic scene. Against a blue-toned apartment building, a solitary parked car captures our focus. Within this work, Pavlidis uses the motif of the car to symbolise the passage of time - material items we once coveted in our youth becoming forgotten over time. As with many of his works, ‘Dusk’ is a testament to the artist’s ability to find beauty in the banal.

Pavlidis’ work is represented across many major institutions both nationally and internationally, including the National Gallery of Australia, State Library of Victoria, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. For lovers of Australian contemporary print-makers, or those intrigued by scenes of everyday life, ‘Dusk’ is a compelling find.
