Jim Pavlidis is a contemporary artist, illustrator, and printmaker based in Melbourne. A former visual journalist and illustrator at The Age, Pavlidis has become recognisable for his references to Australian iconography, including representations of AFL players in action, and depictions of Melbourne urban landscapes. Through his works, Pavlidis often explores scenes of everyday, domestic living - in the mundane, the artist finds unexpected beauty.
In ‘Opera’, the artist represents a banal scene of Melbourne urban living - against a graffiti-ridden brick wall, four rubbish bins stand to attention. Humourously titled ‘Opera’, Pavlidis creates a sense of narrative, with the artist re-imagining the open rubbish lid as a solo singer, belting out an aria. Vibrant and energetic, this lithograph is an acute reflection of Pavlidis’ artistic ethos of finding beauty in the everyday.
Pavlidis’ work is represented across many major institutions both nationally and internationally, including the National Gallery of Australia, State Library of Victoria, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. For lovers of Australian contemporary print-makers, or those intrigued by scenes of everyday life, ‘Opera’ is a joyful find.
