Australian contemporary artist Michael Peck’s visual world is bracingly intimate. He places figures, landscapes and still lifes in total stillness, conjuring a sense of mystery, remoteness and unease that speaks to the conditions of a postmodern world. Beneath mass media, the individual grows atomised and detached from their culture – a lone subject in a wintery landscape.

This work is an original watercolour. It depicts a landscape that despite the quietness, percolates with possibilities. There is an enigmatic significance to this vista – a memory or future moment destined to play out. Without offering answers, Peck leaves the viewer to forge their own meaning.

Peck is a highly collectable artist. In 1998 he won the National Gallery of Victoria’s Trustees Award, was a finalist in 2010 Dobell Drawing Prize, the 2005 Metro Art Award and the 2013 and 2014 Sulman Prize. Represented at the National Portrait Gallery and at Monash University, his work is a compelling find for collectors of contemporary and figurative art.
