Contemporary Australian printmaker Jenny Peterson uses found objects and flora as the basis of her work to create monoprints, collagraphs, etching and nature prints. The artist trained at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, moving on to teach printmaking at Federation University. Essential to her practice is the process of collecting and using found objects to respond intuitively to her surroundings. Combining personal memory and rural experience with material intimacy, Peterson delicately layers textures, embossed metal and used objects to create pieces rich with symbolism.

‘Cold Corner #1’ is any icy reencounter with the inevitable yet fortuitous markings that accumulate on the surface of a found road sign. Adopting the Intaglio print method - in which ink forms an impression of the printing plate’s recessions - the artist embraces the unpredictability of both the found object and print medium. Through this method, Peterson archives the object’s trace - its rust, abrasions and scratches reimagined as a poetic record of its life before. Using a deep, frosty blue, Peterson’s print has a strikingly glacial quality, a testament to the artist’s intention to elevate the everyday into something beautiful.

Winner of the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Award in 2024, Peterson has exhibited in a range of Australian galleries like Brunswick St Gallery, Gippsland Art Gallery and Perc Tucker Regional gallery. Her works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, State Library of Victoria, Universiti Sains Malaysia and the University of Colorado. Considered, sensual and sincere, Peterson’s work is a captivating find.
