Contemporary Australian printmaker Jenny Peterson uses found objects and flora as the basis of her printmaking practice. The artist trained at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, moving on to teach printmaking at Federation University. Essential to her practice is the process of collecting and using found objects to respond intuitively to her surroundings. Combining personal memory and rural experience with material intimacy, Peterson delicately layers textures, embossed metal and used objects to create pieces rich with form and symbolism.

‘Verdant Drift #1’ is one of Peterson’s more sensitive mixed-media works. An impression of three leaf specimens of camellia - floral symbols of grace, sophistication and desire - this work is both delicate and grounding, reimagining touch through a textural ensemble of trace. Taking printed metal as its base, the loose circular coloured wash makes for a balanced composition that ultimately foregrounds the intricate leaf and root structures of the camellia flower - coming together in a meditation on the tactile connections between things.

Winner of the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Award in 2024, Peterson has exhibited in a range of Australian galleries like Brunswick St Gallery, Gippsland Art Gallery and Perc Tucker Regional gallery. Her works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, State Library of Victoria, Universiti Sains Malaysia and the University of Colorado. Considered, sensual and sincere, Peterson’s work is a captivating find.
