Look out! In Catherine Pilgrim’s Untitled a spider creeps into frame. To striking effect, Pilgrim harnesses white space, creating a sense of suspense and intrigue. The spider’s walk - thin limb by thin limb - is distilled, spurring curiosity in a creature we may typically shy from.

Untitled forms part of ‘Footprints’, a suite of prints by sixteen Central Victorian artists that coincided with the international printmaking conference IMPACT 7 2011: Intersections & Counterpoints’. Exploring themes of sustainability, reconstitution and recycling, ‘Footprints’ celebrated the Central Victorian landscape, experimental printmaking and the importance of conservation.

Pilgrim’s practice centres around absence and still lifes, using art to unfurl historical narratives. She is the recipient of the Australian Print Workshop Collie Trust Award, and her work is held at the National Gallery of Australia, National Australia Bank, Australian War Memorial and Castlemaine Art Museum.

For collectors of prints, still lives and arachnid admirers, Untitled is a precious find.
