In his work, Ben Quilty balances naturalism with expressionism. In this etching, Quilty draws the human skull - somehow finding life in the memento mori. Captured from one of six angles, what may look spontaneous is instead, a feat of Quilty’s raw, visceral talent.

Quilty’s articulation of the human experience has resonated nationally and internationally. Represented in most public galleries, in 2011 he served as Australia’s official war artist stationed in Afghanistan. Quilty remains one of Australia’s most acclaimed working artists.
