‘Brown Lily’ is a portrait of David Rankin’s wife, Lily Brett. An author and Holocaust survivor, Rankin is profoundly inspired by his wife’s life, illustrating two of her books about the Holocaust and producing a series pivoted around Jewish and matrimonial themes. This particular work (in a different colour) even graced the cover of Brett's 2021 memoir 'Old Seems to be Other People'.

Wide-eyed, world weary and washed in colour, Rankin’s depiction is a cover star, an ode to a woman who possesses the rare gift of creativity and resilience. Rankin won the Wynne Prize in 1983 and is currently represented in numerous public collections including at the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales and Queensland Art Gallery. From 2005 to 2006, a major retrospective of his work toured Australian galleries.

For collectors of prints, socially conscious art and admirers of their wives, ‘Brown Lily’ is the cover girl for you.
