David Rankin 'Lily in Lodz II'

This expansive, poetic portrait is of the writer and artist’s wife Lily Brett. The ‘Lodz’ to which the work refers is located seventy-five miles southeast of Warsaw, Poland. It formed the second largest Jewish community in prewar Poland. In 1940, the Germans established a cramped ghetto in the city, in which 160,000 Jews were forced to live.

Brett is the descendant of Holocaust survivors. Thus this work, delicate in form, is not only an ode to a marriage, but an artery to its subject’s family history of dispossession, violence and resilience.

One of Australia’s most highly regarded artists, Rankin’s work can be found in the collections of most Australian State Galleries, as well as many private and international collections. For collectors of Jewish art, portraits and expansive prints, let ‘Lily in Lodz II’ awe you.
