David Rankin is a prolific Australian artist who practices in oil painting, acrylic painting, and printmaking. With a career spanning over 50 years, Rankin is renowned for his unique artistic language - seamlessly blending elements from Western modernist, traditional East Asian, and Australian First Nations art styles.
Known best for his expressionistic, often abstracted, landscapes, this small work of art shows incredible restraint. Using thick black lines, Rankin creates the impression of two figures, standing closely together. Although these figures are sometimes used within Rankin’s artworks, ‘Two Figures’ is a rare exploration into minimalism. Screen-printed onto a delicate rice paper, an homage to the East Asian artistic techniques, the hero of this work is simplicity and refinement.
A highly esteemed contemporary artist, Rankin won the Wynne Prize in 1983 and is represented in most Australian State Galleries, as well as many other private and public collections. He is based in New York and continues to be exhibited widely. For collectors of screenprints, or those interested in East Asian artistic traditions, ‘Two Figures’ is an intriguing discovery.
