In ‘Moogerah Lake’, John Thomas Rigby captures the Queensland lake. His palette is saturated – trees erupt in gold and orange, the lake is deep blue and mountains rise and fall in red, pea green and pink. By focusing on colour and form, Rigby calls forth the humid Queensland climate, as well as the work of Paul Gauguin, who too painted from tropical settings.

Rigby is one of Australia’s foremost artists. After serving in the military in the Second World War, he went on to win the Women’s Weekly Art Prize for Portraits and the Sulman Prize, and was selected twenty-four times to hang in the Archibald and Sulman Prize respectively.

The subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Brisbane, and a monograph ‘John Rigby: Art and Life’, Rigby is a compelling figure in Queensland art. As vivid and seductive as a tropical holiday, ‘Moogerah Lake’ will brighten collections of landscape art.
