Steve Rosendale’s ‘Goodbye Columbus’ is gleaned from the eponymous film adaptation of Philip Roth’s 1959 novella. It tells the story of Neil Klugman, a working class army veteran and library clerk, and Brenda Patimkin, a wealthy Radcliffe student. The two embark upon an affair after meeting beside the swimming pool at Old Oaks Country Club in upstate New York. Their class differences however, prove fatal.

Rosendale’s work draws upon the collective memories of popular culture. He sets up enthralling mise-en-scenes, elongating a flicker of film into an entire self-contained universe; what’s more is this universe is dappled with nostalgia. ‘Goodbye Columbus’ occurs in a universe that never existed and yet it is somehow familiar, a summer from some past life that we perversely yearn for. What is nostalgia amputated from experience?

Since the early 2000s, Rosendale has exhibited regularly across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. A finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, his work graces the walls of corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas, sparking the imagination of all who view it.
