Steve Rosendale is an Australian artist best known for his pop art style and representations of vintage American culture. In his practice, Rosendale sifts through hundreds of film stills, searching for images that strike him. He then elongates the moment into a full work of art, setting up intriguing mise-en-scènes that linger long after viewing.
In ‘Ice Cream Cake,’ Rosendale depicts a delicious slice of cake, its size only emphasised by the entirely black background. The dark background allows for the cake to almost pop out of the canvas. At first glance, the cake sits simply - frosted, possibly slightly imperfect, resting on a plate. However, it is Rosendale’s attention to detail and pop art style that elevates the cake beyond its edible purpose into an object of contemplation and of awe.
Since the early 2000s, Rosendale has exhibited regularly across Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. A finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, his work graces the walls of corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas, sparking the imagination of all who view it.
