Drawn to the woodcut prints of late 19th century Edvard Munch (the artist best known for ‘The Scream’), Japanese artist Shiko Munakata and the work of William Blake, John Ryrie has established himself as an adept storyteller through the medium of printmaking.

Ryrie’s “Janus” is a lithographic print which focuses on the ancient Roman myth of Janus. According to the story, Janus was once a king who shared his rule with the exiled Roman god Saturn. In return, Saturn rewarded Janus with the gift of profound wisdom and the ability to see into the future and the past. For this reason, Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking forward and a masked face looking backwards. In many ways, Janus appears as a symbol for Ryrie himself - who, like many artists, often looks to the past as inspiration for his art practice.

Ryrie is an esteemed printmaker. He was awarded the Grand Prize in the Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints and a finalist in the Geelong acquisitive print awards, and is represented at the National Gallery of Australia. Ryrie’s “Janus” gives collectors the opportunity to own a timeless work of art.
