Melinda Schawel is interested in surfaces: how ink interacts with paper, light moves across time and how things appear. In ‘Home Again Soon I’, she presents a visual ecology; a symphony of symbols. Hard to distinguish black text hangs beside black marbling, as intricate as a spider’s web. In the background, blood red clouds billow and thin.
At once about the alchemy of paper, natural world and homesickness, this work breathes with stoicism. Schawel is represented at the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank and the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Antwerp. She was commissioned by the City of Casey in 2019 to create a large scale public art project. For collectors of works on paper and abstract art, Schawel is a unique and commanding find.
