Australian printmaker Anne Starling is recognised for her deeply perceptive works, using personal observation to explore authentic human interaction with urban and industrial landscapes. Having studied art at the UNSW College of Fine Arts, Starling has exhibited in a range of solo shows, major survey exhibitions, and biennales. Her works present a profound vision of the social and ecological structures of Australia’s urban areas.

Belonging to her larger ‘Edge of Industry’ series, Starling creates a scene of an old man gazing out the window of his house, threatened by the growing urbanisation of his area. In this print, the artist uses a scorching orange tone, which provides a striking contrast against the bold silhouettes the artist is renowned for. Starling’s use of colour is both unique and nostalgic, serving as an ode to the heat of the Australian suburban summer - conjuring up the feeling of hot pavements, melting bitumen, and the smell of dried grass. Starling cleverly merges these familiar senses with commentary on environmental change in contemporary suburban life, ultimately asking how we build ‘home’ in urban spaces.

Starling’s work is represented in public and private collections across Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Print Council of Australia. Her works are also held in international collections in Barcelona and Taiwan.
