Sam Suttie is a contemporary, Queensland-based artist who is best known for her paintings that explore the intersection of nature and still life, often incorporating domestic interior spaces, everyday objects, and imagery of native birdlife. In her works, Suttie constructs scenes that seem to exist between reality and imagination, creating compositions that are symbolically layered and imbued with a dreamlike atmosphere.

In her painting ‘Free Birds’, Suttie composes an intriguing scene, one that explores the junction of nature and captivity. Against a traditional studio backdrop, five blue fairywrens sit perched on the exterior of a metal cage, no longer restrained inside. The birds are imbued with a sense of motion, the birds caught mid-flight, ready to launch again. However, Suttie’s painting is layered. The birds have freedom of movement, and yet they remain clinging to the cage - appearing as both intruders within the still life scene, and central subjects.

Since becoming a full time artist in 2019, Suttie has exhibited regularly, both in solo and group exhibitions, and she has been a finalist in several art prizes. Often incorporating both natural and man-made elements, Suttie's layered still life compositions are a compelling addition to any collection of interesting interior scenes.
