In ‘Grass Castle King’, Louise Tomlinson evokes a haunted landscape. The work takes its title from Dame Mary Durack’s 1959 book of the same name. In it, Durack tells the story of her grandfather, an Irish immigrant who led a fleet of drovers as they brought their cattle on hoof from the tropical north. The book is noted for its portrayal of women in the pastoral industry and the respect shared between the pastoralists and local Indigenous population. 

Under Tomlinson’s eye, this classic Australian history book is transformed into poetry. She imagines the bush as a spectral presence, skirting a lone man. For collectors of contemporary landscape art and those interested in Australian history, Tomlinson is a quietly thrilling find.
