Clayton Tremlett is an contemporary Australian printmaker whose work is influenced by the country's historical narratives. In Fragment: 18 of 128, the artist evokes the collectables of his childhood. Equally as important as the players on the front of the collector card, Tremlett celebrated collecting the puzzle pieces found on the back. Found on the back of a 1976 VFL Scanlens football card, this fragment of chewing gum advertisement stood out to the artist with the vibrant pink that he can remember almost tasting.
This print was commissioned as a part of Whereabouts: Printmakers Respond, an exhibition where 50 emerging and established artists explore their sense of place and personal connections to country and home. Working on the same size page, each artist expressed their unique positioning through the printmaking technique of their choice.
An innovator in printmaking techniques, Tremlett has exhibited extensively across Australia and is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Gallery, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery among other public and private collections nationally and internationally. For examiners or enjoyers of Australian history, Tremlett is a rewarding find.
