Mick Turner is an artist of multitudes. Famed as the guitarist from rock back the Dirty Three, Turner is also a respected visual artist – having spent most of his life painting. His works are mysterious, informed by the naive art movement, 19th century impressionist and pop art. They move between characters and landscapes, rich in colour and ambiguous in meaning.
‘Dunes’ exemplifies Turner’s practice. A figure emerges from the shadows on the left, a velvety patchwork of coastal shrubs unfolding behind him. There is a dreamlike sensibility to the composition, an emotional life that burns without precision.
For collectors of contemporary landscapes or fans of Dirty Three, discover Turner’s other side – a masterful painter who leaves the viewer guessing.
