Respected Australian artist Julian Twigg works across painting, ceramics and printmaking. His impasto paintings employ broad swathes of colour and form, evoking the emotive undercurrents and shifting conditions of the natural world.
‘Blue Sail, Hobsons Bay’ is a delectably textual landscape. Twigg’s licks of paint are like globs of icing, working together to evoke the ocean, sky, and the sailboats and ships that move between them. Rather than exactitudes, Twigg pursues feeling and beauty.
Twigg’s works are held in several regional and tertiary collections, and at the National Gallery of Australia. He was awarded the ANL Maritime Prize in 2007 and the Mayor’s Prize Waverley Art Prize in 2010. For collectors of contemporary landscapes or Hobsons Bay locals, ‘Blue Sail, Hobsons Bay’ is a wonderful find.
