What do you see in these golden curves? Dated 1972, this modernist screenprint is a dance of suggestion - tilt your head one way and there’s a question mark, an ampersand or maybe a lowercase “a”. Readjust emphasis however, and the curves melt into an egg and wave, the innards of a lava lamp or folded fabric.
For collectors of 1970s art, screenprints and abstraction, ‘Abstract Yellow Curves’ is a treat. It is an example of hard-edge abstraction, the art movement born in reaction to the hyper-subjectiveness of abstract expressionism. Without the artist’s emotionality, it’s all left to the viewer.
So stare into these hypnotic curves and repeat after me - what do you see?
