Through Kate Vella’s artistic lens, interior spaces are imagined vibrantly. Based in the Southern Highlands in NSW, but born in Malta, Vella has become renowned for her still life paintings of tablescapes. Vividly coloured and layered in texture, each of Vella’s paintings offer a unique assemblage of household objects - the domestic world re-configured.

In ‘Magnolia with Pear and Egg’, Vella creates the impression of a table surface populated with various items from her house, including a dissected pear, a bouquet of flowers, various ceramic dishes, and a single egg. Drawing on classic still life genre painting, Vella’s choice of composition appears at once intentional and accidental - both a captured scene of everyday life, and a deliberately-curated vignette, each individual item imbued with meaning.

Vella has exhibited extensively across New South Wales and Australia, both in solo and group shows. She has been selected as a finalist in the Emerging category of the Ravenswood Australia Women’s Art Prize twice, in 2020 and 2022, and she has been a finalist in several other prizes. For collectors of vibrant still life scenes, Vella’s paintings are a compelling addition to any collection.
