Through Kate Vella’s artistic lens, interior spaces are imagined vibrantly. Based in the Southern Highlands in NSW, but born in Malta, Vella has become renowned for her still life paintings of tablescapes. Vividly coloured and layered in texture, each of Vella’s paintings offer a unique assemblage of household objects - the domestic world re-configured.

In ‘Tetragona Gumnuts with Plums and Pears’, Vella creates a scene of a table surface populated with various household and organic items - a sprig of eucalyptus, a pear, a ceramic milk jug. Drawing on classic still life genre painting, Vella’s choice of composition appears at once intentional and accidental - both an impression of her everyday life and a deliberately-curated vignette, each individual item imbued with meaning.

Vella has exhibited extensively across New South Wales and Australia, both in solo and group shows. She has been selected as a finalist in the Emerging category of the Ravenswood Australia Women’s Art Prize twice, in 2020 and 2022, and she has been a finalist in several other prizes. For collectors of vibrant still life scenes, Vella’s paintings are a compelling addition to any collection.
