Susan Wald is a Melbourne-based artist who explores themes of mortality. As a multi-disciplinary artist Wald’s work spans painting, printmaking and drawing. Wald’s recent works have explored her relationship to land and its legacy, reflecting on Lake Mungo as a site of historical violence. Her works focus on the human figure, landscapes and portraiture.
The monotype ‘Mungo Dusk 4’ is an expressive image of the view at Lake Mungo. In this print Wald captures a snapshot of the dust momentarily hitting the tops of the surrounding mountains, casting them in an orange halo. This gestural work evokes the pent-up energy of a hiker overlooking the view, rendered hazily in a nod to this experience.
Susan Wald has exhibited broadly in both solo and group exhibitions. Some career highlights include frequent solo exhibitions at Tacit Gallery, Queenscliff Gallery and the Art Vault. Her work features in the collections of notable institutions such as the Australia National Gallery, the State Library of Victoria and Gippsland Regional Gallery.
For lovers of Australian landscapes, Wald’s ‘Dusk at Red Top III’ is a captivating find.
