Susan Wald is a Melbourne-based artist who explores themes of mortality. As a multi-disciplinary artist Wald’s work spans painting, printmaking and drawing. Wald’s recent works have explored her relationship to land and its legacy, reflecting on Lake Mungo as a site of historical violence. Her works focus on the human figure, landscapes and portraiture.

The monoprint ‘The Gathering’ features three animal skulls set against a red background. Produced following a series of drawing trips to Lake Mungo, Wald focuses on the imagery of skulls in reference to the history of colonial violence committed on this site. As a modern-day visitor to Lake Mungo, this work reflects on the ability for land to withhold memory. In a nod to its history, these skulls remind the viewer of impermanence, demanding we answer to our own mortality.

Susan Wald has exhibited broadly in both solo and group exhibitions. Some career highlights include frequent solo exhibitions at Tacit Gallery, Queenscliff Gallery and the Art Vault. Her work features in the collections of notable institutions such as the Australia National Gallery, the State Library of Victoria and Gippsland Regional Gallery.

For examiners of Australian history, Wald’s ‘The Gathering’ is a striking find.
