Through her evocative oil painting practice, Northern Rivers-based artist Dawn Walker brings together the traditions of still life and landscape painting. Often recreating impressions of collectible ‘tourist’ memorabilia, Walker explores how these seemingly humble tokens can embody our connections to place, regional identity, and personal memory.

In ‘Princes Bridge, Melbourne’, Walker represents some of Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks, looking from the banks of the Yarra River towards Princes Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Flinders Street Station. The work, however, is itself a layered painting within a painting. Captured on the surface of a porcelain dish, the scene takes on the character of a holiday souvenir - a familiar Melbourne vista reimagined as a tangible reminder of place and memory.

Based in Tweed Heads, Walker has been selected for several national and international art prizes, including the Wollumbin Art Award, the BAM Art Prize, and the Heysen Prize for Landscape. Alongside exhibiting throughout Australia, Walker was selected for the Royal Academy of Art’s Summer Exhibition in London. For collectors drawn to distinctive landscape and still life painting, Dawn Walker’s works are sure to intrigue.
