A leading contemporary artist, Guan Wei splits his time between Sydney and Beijing. He works across printmaking, painting, sculpture and site specific installations, forging a unique visual language that crosses the personal and political, meditating on identity, immigration, exile, climate change and history.

‘Come On!’, an original lithograph, is a delightfully jocular work. Two nude figures are caught mid-fight and mid-flight, fleshy combatants propelling from terracotta red dirt. Wei’s figures recall both cherubs and Xiangpu wrestlers, an Ancient form of Chinese fighting. They are a twist on the nude in art, an absurd embodiment of bravado, conflict and frustration.

Wei is a multi-time Wynne and Archibald Prize finalist, represented across public collections including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia and internationally at the Contemporary Art and Culture Centre, Osaka, Japan. His work conjures an imagined realm, at once poignant and fantastical, replete with a dollop of wit.

For collectors of contemporary art, Wei is an enriching find. Go on, the newly framed ‘Come On!’ is calling you to take it on.
