James Whitington is a master printmaker and artist. From 1977 to 2000 he worked with a range of distinguished artists including Brett Whiteley, Charles Blackman, Tim Storrier, David and Arthur Boyd. In 1989, he had his first solo exhibition of paintings and monotypes.

‘Chair’ is a strangely beguiling image. It is gestural and abstract, rough to the touch yet liquid to the eye. In the dance of Whitington’s marks are infinite allusions: jellyfish; lights; chalk; a deconstructed chair; firing neurons; a torch in the night sky. This is an art of movement, suggestion, instinct and grace.

This work is monotype, meaning that while created using printmaking techniques, it exists as a unique image. In 2008, Whitington was featured in ‘Mono Uno’, a travelling survey of the Australian monotype curated by Professor Tom Middlemost.

Whitington has exhibited widely and is represented in numerous regional and tertiary collections. His work is informed by profound technical knowledge, as well as great creative impulse.

For collectors of abstract and gestural art, and works on paper, this is a spellbinding find.
