Sophie Zelder is a Melbourne-based printmaker and artist whose practice often explores the possibilities of woodcut printmaking and Mokulito, a form of Japanese wood lithography. Botanical subjects feature prominently throughout her work, with Zelder often allowing the natural grain of the wood to become a visual ‘collaborator’. The texture and organic patterns of her chosen medium are integrated into each composition, lending her prints a distinctive sense of depth, movement, and tactility.
In 'Blue Ginger', Zelder offers an energetic and atmospheric interpretation of the natural world. Rendered in a striking monochromatic palette of deep blue and stark white, the artist captures an evocative botanical scene imbued with the quiet romance of moonlight. The bold contrast between light and shadow lends the composition a sense of depth and movement, while the natural grain of the wood, integral to Zelder’s practice, introduces an additional layer of organic texture and visual intrigue.
Zelder has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Victoria, and in 2026 was selected as a finalist in the Omnia Art Prize. For collectors drawn to the rich textures and distinctive qualities of woodcut printmaking, or those intrigued by fresh perspectives on the natural world, Zelder’s works offer a joyful and compelling discovery.
