Sophie Zelder is a Melbourne-based printmaker and artist whose practice often explores the possibilities of woodcut printmaking and Mokulito, a form of Japanese wood lithography. Botanical subjects feature prominently throughout her work, with Zelder often allowing the natural grain of the wood to become a visual ‘collaborator’. The texture and organic patterns of her chosen medium are integrated into each composition, lending her prints a distinctive sense of depth, movement, and tactility.
In ‘Lotus Pond 2’, Zelder offers a vibrant and expressive interpretation of the natural world. Rendered in boldly contrasting colours, the organic forms appear almost otherworldly, shaped by the artist’s sensitive interpretation of tone, light, and form. The natural grain of the wood introduces an additional layer of texture and visual intrigue, with fine linear details evoking the delicate appearance of raindrops suspended mid-fall.
Zelder has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Victoria, and in 2026 was selected as a finalist in the Omnia Art Prize. For collectors drawn to the rich textures and distinctive qualities of woodcut printmaking, or those intrigued by fresh perspectives on the natural world, Zelder’s works offer a joyful and compelling discovery.
