Deborah Walker

Deborah Walker is a Melbourne-based artist, best known for her figurative oil paintings of female subjects. With a practice spanning over 30 years,  Walker has developed a distinctive visual language that examines ideas of female representation while drawing on scenes of everyday life to evoke a subtle, unnameable longing. Her carefully posed figures are often placed within liminal, slightly uncanny interiors and landscapes, creating compositions that are both psychologically charged and immediately intriguing.

Walker completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Visual Arts at Monash University and Victorian College of the Arts. Since becoming a full-time artist, she has lectured extensively at tertiary institutions.

Walker has regularly been selected as a finalist in national art prizes, such as the Portia Geach Art Prize, the Glover Art Prize, and the Bayside Art Prize. She has exhibited across Australia and internationally, and her works are held with many major public institutions, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia.
