Deborah Walker is a Melbourne-based artist, best known for her figurative oil paintings of female subjects. With a practice spanning over 30 years, Walker has developed a distinctive visual language that examines ideas of female representation while drawing on scenes of everyday life to evoke a subtle, unnameable longing.

In ‘I Never Really Left (Ariadne)’, Walker reimagines the mythological figure of Ariadne - the Cretan princess who aided Theseus in escaping the Minotaur’s labyrinth. The composition is immediately arresting: positioned on her hands and knees, the female figure turns away from the viewer, facing a sparse, liminal landscape. Through this quiet yet charged interpretation, Walker adopts Ariadne’s perspective, invoking the enduring themes of love, abandonment, and betrayal that define her story. In this painting, Walker also underscores the continued resonance that these myths can have within a contemporary context.

Walker has regularly been selected as a finalist in national art prizes, such as the Portia Geach Art Prize, the Glover Art Prize, and the Bayside Art Prize. She has exhibited across Australia and internationally, and her works are held with many major public institutions, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. For collectors of figurative oil paintings, or those fascinated by contemporary female perspectives, Walker’s paintings are an awe-inspiring discovery.
