Marie Mansfield
Originally from Christchurch, Marie Mansfield is an esteemed contemporary painter who captures the moments from larger stories. With a touch of voyeurism, she explores the effects of human presence and absence in imitate landscapes or still lifes. She works with subdued colour palettes and smooth paint strokes, imbuing a sense of elegance into the everyday. Bedrooms and dining tables evoke a sense of calm or unease, depending on how the viewer interprets Mansfield’s paintings.
“I’ve presented something here that’s reduced; moments. It’s not explained. And I kind of like people to put their own story or interpretation to it.”
Now based in Sydney, Mansfield has studied at the Julian Ashton Art School. In 2021 she won the Portia Geach Memorial Prize and in 2020 completed a residency at Bundanon. Mansfield also has been a finalist in the Archibald, Doug Moran and Black Swan Portraiture Prizes.
