Mark Howson

B. 1961

Mark Howson was born in Staffordshire, England and arrived in Australia in 1969. He was one of the founding members of Melbourne’s Roar Studios, an early artist-run-initiative that between 1982 and 2000 saw artists like David Larwill, Mark Schaller and Pasquale Giardino produce work that rebelled against the art establishment.

Howson’s work trades in a meditative cubist style, inspired by the art movements of expressionism, abstraction and the avant-garde. His paintings can be simple and textual, impeccably balanced compositions of form.

Howson’s work is held across Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia, as well as in numerous regional galleries. He has completed sculpture commissions for the National Gallery of Australia.
