Rachel Newling

B. 1956

Rachel Newling is a leading Australian printmaker celebrated for her richly detailed, hand-coloured linocuts depicting the beauty and diversity of native flora and fauna. Her work reflects a lifelong connection to nature and a deep respect for its fragility.

Originally from Cornwall, Newling studied art in London before moving to Australia in the early 1980s, where she developed a distinctive studio practice uniting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Each print is made entirely by hand using a centuries-old Japanese technique on delicate Washi paper, then individually coloured with archival pigments. This meticulous process ensures that while editioned, every impression is unique, marked by the subtle variations of the artist’s hand.

Her imagery—vivid portrayals of birds, flowers, and native wildlife—captures both the vibrancy and vulnerability of the Australian landscape. A dedicated wildlife volunteer, Newling’s direct experience caring for native species brings authenticity and emotional depth to her art.

Rachel’s work is held in the collections of Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Artbank, Telstra, Cairns Regional Gallery, the Royal Botanic Gardens Trust Sydney, the City of Sydney, News Corp, the Australian War Memorial, the Queens Club Sydney, and numerous corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.
