Rachel Newling’s Regent Honeyeater with Native Flowers celebrates the vibrant biodiversity and beauty of the Australian landscape. More than a depiction, it draws viewers into a living ecosystem where native flora and fauna intertwine. As a leading contemporary printmaker, Newling transforms the linocut into a rich study of form, colour, and texture.

Each impression in this edition of 50 is printed entirely by hand using a traditional Japanese Baren—a circular pad used to press the paper into the inked block. This centuries-old method allows for delicate control and an organic finish that mechanical presses cannot achieve. The prints are made on fine Japanese Washi paper and then meticulously hand-painted over the course of a week, so that while editioned, each impression becomes effectively a monoprint, distinguished by its own variations in colour and tone.

Regent Honeyeater with Native Flowers merges bold, modern design with the reverence for nature found in botanical and ornithological art. Banksia, Wattle, and Eucalyptus blossoms entwine with the striking Regent Honeyeater—a critically endangered bird once common across south-eastern Australia, now surviving only in small pockets of forest. Its presence in the work is both beautiful and poignant, reminding us of the fragility and wonder of the natural world.

Superbly archivally framed in a classic black frame, the work is ready to take home and hang. An exceptional choice for collectors of contemporary Australian printmaking or works with ecological or botanical themes, its intricate detail and vivid colour make it a striking focal point in any interior.
