Sue Ford

B. 1943 – 2009

Sue Ford is considered a pioneer of Australian photography. She was among the most important artists to emerge in the wave of 1970s feminist photographers, leading a practice that merged the political and personal, explored private and forgotten histories, and experimented with mediums. In testing the boundaries of film, printing and multimedia techniques, Ford gave form to her interest in the politics of representation.

Ford’s achievements are diverse. She founded the Reel Women filmmaker’s cooperative, was nominated for an AFI award in 1997 and exhibited at the 1982 Biennale of Sydney. In 1974 she became the first woman photographer to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (1974), where she was again honoured with a major retrospective in 2014.
